"Mom! I made a crawling caterpillar! ... A rolling racecar! ... A ... thing!" With a whopping 95 pieces, Gears! Gears! Gears! Basic Building Set is a fantastic first construction toy for young builders. Bright, sturdy, uniformly sized plastic gears slip smoothly onto pegs on the square bases, which are easily linked together in any number of ways. Pillars and extenders expand the dimensional possibilities sideways, up, and out. Your 3-year-old will be an instant success at inventing any number of masterpieces with moving, working parts. Gears! Gears! Gears! holds plenty of intrigue for older siblings as well. An activity guide with instructions in English, Spanish, French, and German is included. And, as your little inventor grows, the basic set is perfectly compatible with other Gears! Gears! Gears! sets, including Wacky Factory and the Pulleys Plus accessory set. --Julie Ubben

Editorial Review:
For the young Rube Goldbergs of the world, this may be a gateway toy. With eight building platforms, 48 brightly colored, 2.25-inch plastic gears, a handle, and 39 connecting pieces, a child can progress from simple cause-and-effect play to constructing a racing car, caterpillar, or zigzag stairs. (Directions for assembly are illustrated, but preschoolers will need adult help). The activity guide (in English, French, German, and Spanish) provides two pages of instructions and suggestions for mini-experiments. This durable, easy-to-use toy is good for kids who like knowing how things work. --Louise Carter

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent toy
My three year old asked for this toy for her birthday because she likes playing with it so much at school. It's amazing. Hours of fun, both building the gears and using the pieces for any number of other games. It's a terrific toy - providing educational entertainment for multiple aged kids and adults. Highly recommended.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - My Grandson loves this toy
I got this for my Grandsons 5th birthday. He had no problem fitting the bits together and devised many ways to make the gears work. The family is able to enjoy playing with this as well. If your child enjoys building things this would be a great gift.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Terrible toy
Gears! Beginning building set was a huge disappointment. This is actually the first product I have felt strongly enough about to review. I bought it for my three-year-old who loves to build and construct. The pieces that connect the gears are so poorly designed that it is virtually impossible to build anything. They don't fit together well and they certainly don't balance. The constructions shown on the box must have been made by a team of adults holding the pieces in place while someone else super-glued them. Extremely shoddy design and misleading photos. With some of our more complex building sets we model to our son the concept of "try and try again" but with this toy we had to introduce the concept of somebody making a very bad toy. My toddler kept telling me to try and the things kept falling apart. My son lost interest in under ten minutes and has never asked for it again. We had unfortunately ripped the box open so I couldn't return it. I actually threw it away which I have never done with a toy. I just would not feel right donating this and there are many small parts which pose a choking hazard (it does say this on the box). We put it in the recycling bin in the hope that someone can get some use out of it!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - A little boring
This was a gift for my 4 yr old for Christmas. He has played with it once. If you have a small toddler they would enjoy it, my son was a little too advanced for this.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Gears for Kids
I purchased this toy as a gift for my nephew and he loves it. He imagines
he's building a super high structure, a dinasour, clock, etc. It really helps with his imagination, dexterity and during playdates all the kids enjoy playing with the toy. I highly recommend it. Plus, it's easy to clean up and doesn't hurt if you accidently step on them.
