Rating: - Horrible image quality, poor fit an finish
Don't make the same mistake I did and buy this camera based on all the "great" reviews here. Most people writing reviews here are amateurs (since only an amateur would buy this camera) and don't realize just how awful this camera's images are. I bought this camera for my sister after insufficient research, only to be shockingly disappointed.
The images are simply incredibly noisy, and Sony tries to cover up this massive shortfall by adding massive amount of digital "noise correction." What causes all this noise? This is simply a bad camera with a very insensitive CCD.
In very bright light, you will see noise even in darker colors.
In medium light or with a flash, you will see noise in all shades except whites and the brightest colors. This is how most of your pictures will look, like junk.
In low light, the noise problem is so overwhelming that "noise reduction" kicks in, trying to hide the fact that this is a poor quality camera. The "noise reduction" basically makes the image look like a pastel painting, and removes pretty much all the fine and even not-so-fine detail.
The end result is you will get less detail with this "10 megapixel" camera than I did with an Canon 4MP camera 6 years ago. If I had to rate the image quality, I'd say the camera takes pictures with about as much detail as a decent 3 MP camera.
The build quality is also lacking and unsophisticated. Though the camera looks nice in pictures, it feels cheap in your hand.
On the positive side, the 5x zoom is nice, and so is the user interface. Buy the 8 MP Canon, it is cheaper and takes much much better photos.

The "Super Steady Shot" is unbelievable. All the pictures I have taken have been blur free without using a tripod. Want a picture indoors without using flash to get that natural feeling this the camera is for you. Can't say enough about the auto focus. All the options you could think of. Amazon's FREE shipping arrived fast and packaged very well.

This is an easy product to describe... for its price its easily one of the most powerful cameras i ever had. Pictures are colourful, sharp and definetively BIG, 10.1 MP is no joke!
The Camera itself feels pretty solid and goodlooking, actually that was one of the main reasons that i bought it because i don't like how "Canon's" looks like no matter canons are great machines..
to me is a perfect 10/10.

I always like to wait until I have used a product before I say anything good or bad about it. So far I have been pleased with the camera. For the price of the camera the pictures I have taken and the movies I have made are very good. The only bad thing is pictures taken using the flash don't turn out very good. But you can take pictures in low light that do turn out good. For a look at photos and videos taken with the Sony DSCW170 on line use this link. Copy and paste.
Click on the Traveler Videos to see some videos taken with the camera. The videos will look a little choppy due to the web site's size limitation. The battery time is good even when making videos but is sure is nice to have a back up.

Great little camera, but packs a big punch. This camera has lots of features, but is consumer friendly. This camera comes highly recommended.
